Gold valuation: understanding the value of your jewellery, coins and bars

Would you like to get an estimate for a piece of gold jewellery, coins or a gold bar before visiting a branch? Our online gold valuation tool gives you an initial estimate based on the weight, fineness and current gold price used by the calculator. Select the category of your item, then enter its weight in grams or the number of coins and bars. Your total is updated as you make your selection.

For jewellery, the quantity of fine gold depends on the carat weight: an 18-carat piece contains 75 % of gold, compared with 58.5 % for 14-carat and 37.5 % for 9-carat. The weight of gemstones and non-precious elements must be deducted. For a piece of jewellery, the calculation uses the weight of fine gold for the selected model. Ingots and small ingots are valued based on their weight and an assumed purity of 999.9‰.

Frequently Asked Questions about Gold Valuation

How can I find out the carat weight of my jewellery?

The hallmark may give an indication of the fineness, but it is not always present or legible. If you are in any doubt, have your jewellery checked at a branch before deciding on a fineness. A golden colour alone is not enough to identify solid gold.

How do I weigh my jewellery for a valuation?

Use a sufficiently accurate set of scales and group the jewellery by fineness. The calculation relates to the precious metal; gemstones, mechanisms and other materials must be taken into account during the valuation.

Does the amount shown represent a firm buy-back offer?

No. This is an indicative, non-binding estimate based on the information provided and the current market price. The final amount is confirmed once the item has been identified, weighed and its fineness verified. Any numismatic premiums are not included in this calculation of the metal value.

What is the difference between a ingot and a small ingot?

In this estimator, sizes ranging from 250 g to 1 kg are shown as bars. Sizes under 250 g are shown as small bars. Select the weight stated on your product; its weight and purity will be verified at the branch.

Valuation of silver: jewellery, artefacts, coins and ingots

Our silver value estimator helps you to assess the metal value of your silver jewellery, items, coins and bars. For a weighed item, enter its weight and fineness. For ingots, select the size and then enter the quantity. This tool is separate from the gold estimator: each metal has its own selection and its own total.

The weight of fine silver is equal to the weight of the object multiplied by its purity. Thus, 100 g of 925 ‰ silver theoretically contains 92.5 g of fine silver. The calculator then applies the market price of pure silver per gramme and the coefficient corresponding to the category: 70 % for jewellery and objects, and 80 % for coins and ingots. For each item, the weight of fine silver is determined according to the characteristics of the selected model.

Frequently Asked Questions about Money Estimation

What does the 925 hallmark on a silver item mean?

The fineness of 925‰ indicates a theoretical silver content of 92.5 %. The remainder consists of other metals. The finenesses provided in the calculator allow the estimate to be adjusted to the quantity of fine silver; they must be confirmed during the appraisal.

Can I appraise silver-coloured metal using this tool?

No. The categories for jewellery and other items refer to sterling silver. Silver-plated items consist of a layer of silver over another material and must not be declared as sterling silver.

How can I value my silver coins?

Select the model that corresponds to your coins and enter the number of each. The calculation uses the fine silver weight of this model and a coefficient of 80 %. Check the denomination and type of coin: a coin with a similar face value may have a different composition. Collector’s premiums are not included.

Why is an expert assessment still necessary?

The type, weight, condition and composition of the items must be checked. Stones and other non-precious materials are not valued as silver. The online valuation is for guidance only; the final amount is confirmed in branch.
